BAN ASSAULT WEAPONS | Print |  E-mail
March 1, 2010

Unfortunately, over the last year, President Barack Obama has chosen not to address the gun issue.  I understand that his plate is very full, but I also understand that in American politics with the large amount of issues and problems that we are facing, only the issues that are forced to the front burner will be addressed.

The National Rifle Association continues to lobby to stop any movement to stop the easy access to guns that is resulting in the continued rise of violence across the country, especially against our children.

I am proposing that we have a rally in Washington, DC in May or June of this year, to gather people from across this country to begin addressing this gun issue, by asking President Obama to at least begin the conversation by reinstating the ban on assault weapons!  No one in America needs assault weapons!

If you are interested in being a part of this gathering or helping to organize it, please contact:

CRITICS SEE LOSS BUT NO GAIN IN VIDEO GAMING

Fr. Michael Pfleger kicked off remarks at a February news conference protesting renewed efforts to override community bans against the 45,000 video gambling machines the state legislature approved for allocation throughout Illinois. Joining him are (from left) John Alan Boryk, Illinois coordinator for Stop Predatory Gambling, based in Washington DC; Chicago political activist Betty Magness; Dolton IL Inspector General Robert Shaw; Nancy Duel, chair of the United Methodist Church Northern Illinois Conference Anti-Gambling Task Force, Arlington Heights IL; 9th Ward Ald. Anthony Beale; Doug Dobmeyer, spokesman for the Task Force To Oppose Gambling in Chicago; and, from St. Sabina Catholic Church, Minister Randall Blakey and Rev. Thulani Magwaza. A broad spectrum of community advocates gathered February 4 at City Hall, where they feared the City Council License Committee might begin considering a repeal of Chicago's ban on video gambling.  "It's a moral issue," said Fr. Michael Pfleger, "but the effect on the community is also economic."

The issue grew out of the Video Gaming Act, which the Illinois legislature rushed through last spring with scant public review and intended to raise funds for a statewide capital improvement bill.  Of the money projected, 70 percent would go to site owners and machine operators.

"We'd lose 95 cents before seeing a nickel," Pfleger said in reference to Chicago's proportion of the take.  "The city is not going to be able to balance its budget on video poker.  They may take in $10 - $15 million, but they are going to spend more than that on police overtime just to manage all the problems that video poker will cause."

Donate to Help the Haitian People

Dear Family,

We are working with the City of Chicago, the Haitian community and Catholic Relief Services to respond to the devastation that has taken place in Haiti.

This weekend we will announce our response and let you know what people can do to help the Haitian people.  This is our Dr. King celebration and this would be an excellent opportunity to honor his memory by helping those who are in need.  We will tithe 10% of our weekend collection to Haiti.  However, if you wish to make a donation over and above this that would be strictly for Haiti please put that offering in an envelope clearly marked Haiti.  We ask that you be as generous as you can to help our sisters and brothers in Haiti.

At our 11:15 am service will call our Haitian members and visitors to come forward for prayer for them and their families.

Rev. Michael L. Pfleger
