WGN News: Chicago honors Martin Luther King Jr.

In 1966 Dr. King held a rally at Soldier Field as part of the Chicago freedom movement– and Friday Mayor Emanuel joined with Father Michael Pfleger of Saint Sabina church along with several parents who have lost their children to gun violence to honor Dr. King’s life and legacy.

The mayor pressed a button flooding the pillars of soldier field in the color blue.

That color blue is symbolic because it represents peace, achieving equality and justice for all– through nonviolence which was Dr. King’s life work.

He would have turned 85-years-old this week.

This lighting ceremony is a part of the Blue light campaign for peace. Several downtown building will also light up in honor of Dr. King and to encourage young people in Chicago to strive for peace and put the guns down.
